Juncker: Talks between UK and Britain will be hard

EC head welcomed Theresa May’s detailed speech

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker warned Britain that negotiations between the EU and Britain on its departure from the common union would be a protracted and extremely hard process, Wednesday. Following Britain PM Theresa May’s clear position on a “clean and fast” separation from the EU after the referendum, Mr. Juncker contacted the British PM and reiterated his position that the Europeans did not have an aggressive disposition to the UK. However, the head of the Commission stressed in a press conference in Strasbourg that severing ties with the EU would be a long and difficult road. “I welcome Mrs. May’s statements, but as I told her yesterday a mere speech does not activate negotiations. When the UK activates article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty an unprecedented negotiation will start which will have to last for 2 years, the impact of which will be significant for the UK, for the EU27 leaders and the EU as a whole”, said Mr. Juncker. Her promised he would everything in his power for a fair and balanced solution, with absolute respect to to EU rules.
