Juncker turns down phone call from Greek PM, but SYRIZA denies this

The EC President J.C. Juncker told his assistant to tell the PM that he couldn’t come to the phone…

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras was spurned by European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker on Saturday because Athens had not sent in reform proposals that it promised for Thursday. The EU official confirmed that Tsipras had requested a phone call for 11.00 CET on Saturday but Juncker declined due to a lack of progress in discussions. “There have been no new developments so there was nothing to discuss,” said the EU official.

Tsipras had also been scheduled to return to Brussels for further discussions in person on Friday, but that visit was cancelled. Instead of meeting with Juncker, Tsipras spurned the terms of the proposals from Greece’s creditors as “absurd” during his defiant speech in Greek parliament. The Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) also failed to make its debt payment to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Friday, saying that they planned to ‘bundle’ money owed for June.

A Greek official has denied that Greece tried to contact Juncker. The Greek government believes that the focus of negotiations at the moment is Berlin, not Brussels.
