Lamia: The fire in the food factory was intentional

Ready-made meals distributed to schools in the area were prepared there and several students had suffered food poisoning

Newsroom May 27 02:14

The fire that burned down the food factory in Lamia was started intentionally, according to estimates by the fire brigade.

It was the factory where the ready-made meals distributed to schools in the area were produced and several students had suffered from food poisoning in the days before the fire.

According to reports, the Arson Investigation Division of the Fire Brigade has ruled that the fire was started intentionally. According to the same information, the relevant prosecutor has already been informed of the evidence so far, while the investigation is continuing in order to find more relevant evidence and to identify the persons behind the fire.

The EFET has suspended the operation of the “Giannitsis” factory

It is recalled that the EFET suspended the reopening of the factory of “Giannitsis Group” days ago after the massive food poisoning of students in schools in Lamia. It is recalled that the meals had been prepared by the company, in whose factory a fire broke out on Sunday night.

Specifically, the auditors of the Single Food Control Authority deemed it appropriate to suspend the operation until suitable conditions are established that will allow for the safe production of food items and EFET issued its Decision No. 5862/22.05.2024.

The announcement of the EFET

“The Ministry of Social Cohesion and Family and OPEKA announce the suspension of the distribution of school meals in the primary schools of the Municipality of Lamia following the decision of the EFET to suspend the operation of the contractor company named “GIANNITSIS LOGISTICS S.A.”

“OPEKA, implementing body of the program of school meals, after the complaints of parents, immediately requested from EFET and the Public Health and Social Care Directorate of the Region of Central Greece, the control of the production unit of the company.

“Today, the decision of EFET No. 5862/22.05.2024 on the suspension of the approval of the production facility of cooked food of the company called “GIANNITSIS LOGISTICS S.A.” was issued.

“Following this decision, the provision of school meals to the primary schools of the Municipality of Lamia which participate in the programme is also suspended”.

OPEKA, which is responsible for the distribution of school meals, decided 24 hours ago to stop feeding from this particular production unit following the complaints.

Worm, uncooked burger and feathers in the rations distributed to pupils in Lamia

At the same time, chilling evidence came to light about the ready-made meals distributed to schools that caused the poisoning of dozens of students in Lamia.

According to the EODY, staphylococcus was found in 10 food samples.

It is recalled that staphylococcus bacteria was found in the pasta meals given to pupils.

One of the photographs presented by Mega, following a complaint received from parents, shows a portion of food prepared by this company and distributed to schoolchildren in which a worm was found. In another photo, an apple can be seen in one of the packets of ready-made meals, which was rotten.

“The first photo is an apple. This is how it was delivered to the child. Six months ago. It’s rotten, it’s a rotten apple which was put in for a child to eat,” the father who made the complaint told Mega.

“The next picture shows the uncooked burger. It’s uncooked. They had too many in many schools, we just found this one. It is distributed to all the schools,” he said.

“The next picture is chicken which you can see on top if you zoom in that it doesn’t have, it still has feathers on it,” he said. “The next one is broccoli which was uncooked most of the time and the legumes uncooked, but what about, caterpillars have been found in the broccoli too many times. The answer is that it was organic that’s why it has caterpillars,” he stressed.
