Listen to Varoufakis’s ‘hacking plan B’ (audio)

“This is how we will do it”

After the uproar caused by reports of former Finance Ministers Yanis Varoufakis’s plan B, which involved hacking all the Greek citizens’ tax code numbers and associate them with new accounts with parallel currency in the form of “IOUs” to circumvent the suffocation imposed by the ECB on Greek bank liquidity, the actual audio excerpt has been released with his consent.

The controversial 23-min audio bit, which was made public Monday by the Official Monetary and Financial Institutions Forum (OMFIF), reveals Varoufakis presenting his ‘Plan B’ idea to hedge funds during a teleconference. Varoufakis insists that his plan was endorsed by Greek PM Alexis Tsipras.

Varoufakis is heard saying that a 5-member team was working in the utmost secrecy on the plan from December 2014, while he says that the creation of ‘new substitute accounts’ of Greek taxpayers would allow the state to cover its liabilities to third parties.

The parallel banking system, according to Varoufakis would give Greece the breathing space necessary while the bank holidays were in place. He then goes on to detail the plan of hacking the tax file numbers of all Greek citizens, while he claims that after capital controls were imposed on Greek banks PM Alexis Tsipras was ready top green light the plan. Varoufakis asserts that German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schauble wanted to drive Greece out of the Eurozone in order to bully France into accepting his strict fiscal model for the Eurozone.
