Merkel-Cameron meeting in London

In view of British elections in May and the drop of his party’s popularity

A meeting between Angela Merkel and David Cameron will take place in London, today. The British PM is seeking the support of Germany  to set up rules to limit immigration within the European Union.

With the immigration issue causing concern to a large percentage of British voters, Cameron seeks to renegotiate the country’s ties with the EU, before the referendum to be held in 2017 whether Britain will remain in the EU or not.

“When Merkel visited London last year, there was also the expectation that she will meet the demands of the British PM on changes to the EU treaty. Merekel did not, and certainly will not, now”, said the chairman of the European Affairs Committee of the German Bundestag.

In view of British elections in May and the drop of his party’s popularity, Cameron has the issue of immigration as a central axis in order to gain the trust of more voters.

The support in this matter from Merkel’s side is vital if Cameron hopes that the EU will agree with his proposals and if the British leader should stand up against Eurosceptics.
