New Health Minister wants more staff

2,800 additional jobs are to be offered in the health sector, says Health Minister Makis Voridis

Greek Health Minister Makis Voridis announced the recruitment of 2,800 doctors, nurses and other personnel in the health sector in an interview with SKAI. He said that 200 of the new personnel will be employed by the National Center of Emergency Care (EKAB).

He said Greek health expenditure is below the European average and said that he is seeking a larger portion of funds for the health sector from the 2015 budget.

Mr. Voridis said that uninsured workers who lose their jobs receive full hospital coverage thanks to a change made by his predecessor, former health minister Adonis Georgiadis. He stated that 75 million euros of the budget are allocated to hospitals whereas 100 million euros is for pharmaceutical coverage.

He said that the rate of profit for pharmacists is “complex” with many technical characteristics, adding that the rate of profit varies from pharmacy to pharmacy. Mr. voridis stated that he is trying to find a just solution with talks with the Troika and other ministerial deputies.
