Adam Johnson has died in hospital following “a freak accident” during an ice hockey game

Nottingham Panthers have confirmed that player Adam Johnson has died in hospital following “a freak accident” during an ice hockey game against Sheffield Steelers.

The 29-year-old American reportedly suffered a slashed neck during the second period of the game at Sheffield’s Utilita Arena.

The game was stopped as Johnson received treatment on the ice, with players forming a ring around him before protective screens were put up. The players returned to the locker rooms before the 8,000-strong crowd made their way out of the Sheffield Arena.

Johnson was taken to Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital but could not be saved.

Panthers said: “The Nottingham Panthers are truly devastated to announce that Adam Johnson has tragically passed away following a freak accident at the game in Sheffield last night.
