Parliament ratifies ENFIA amendment

The new taxable figures are to appear on Taxisnet on September 15 but taxpayers are warned to ensure that they are looking at the correct amounts

The Greek Parliament ratified amendments to the new single property tax (ENFIA) on Thursday. The amendments were narrowly passed with 51 MPs voting in favor of changes, 38 MPs against while six abstained. Those in favor of ENFIA amendments were deputies of the New Democracy and PASOK coalition government, whereas the Coalition of the Left (SYRIZA), the Democratic Left, Golden Dawn and Independent Greeks were opposedto the tax. The Greek Communist KKE party deputies voted present along with two independent MPs.

The amendment was ratified only after the coalition government replaced eight of its lawmakers, something that is possible due to the fact that the Parliament is still in its third summer session that allows for 100 rather than 300 MPs to sit in the house.

Changes to the tax include a 20% decrease on ENFIA tax payable for homes that are empty and cut off from electricity. Another amendment also includes tax reductions to 4,000 areas not included in the town plan.

Following Thursday’s amendment, 6.8 million home owners need to enter Taxisnet on Monday, September 15, to find their new tax amount using their personal code. The General Secretariat of Public Revenue cautions taxpayers to not enter the site prior to September 15 and to ensure that the tax amount figure isn’t the one that was issued on the same site on June 30. Taxpayers need to ensure that the figure is payable in six installments. Seeing the taxable amount given in five installments should be indication that the previous, invalid payment is listed rather than the new correct amount.
