Kaisariani Monastery, an Eastern Orthodox monastery, built on the north side of Mt. Hymettus was created in Byzantine times (around 1100). The site has a longer history as a cult center and the site was dedicated to Aphrodite before the Christians took over. The area was mentioned by Pope Innocent III after the Fourth Crucade and Sultan Mehmed II went to the monastery in 1458 when the Turks occupied Attica. The oldest fresco is located on the external south wall of the church that now includes St. Anthony’s chapel. Although the frescoes don’t distinguish themselves with any innovations, they remain prototypes of the 16th century frescoes found in Mt. Athos. Find out more about the frescoes, the monastery and the area by taking a free tour at 10.30 a.m. on Sunday, November 23. Gather at the ticket stand for the tour.
