The enchanting coastline of the Peloponnese – For swimming in the most beautiful beaches

Bays and coves, forested mountain masses descending into the sea, capes, and beaches of every kind

Newsroom July 10 11:48

The Peloponnese is a land blessed with kilometers of coastline, bays and coves, forested mountain masses descending into the sea, capes, and beaches of all types — so many that it becomes difficult to choose the best ones.

Messinia

Gialova – Voidokilia

Its name may not be the most flattering. One theory suggests it derives from an ancient inscription referring to it as “vouvota” (Voidokilia). Another theory links the name to Homer’s “Bouphradon” (a place where oxen live). The beach appears to have been carved by a giant hand using a compass, forming an almost perfect semicircle of 300 degrees.

The remaining 60 degrees form the Ionian Sea’s entrance into its shallow cove, with two identical rocks on either side of the opening — a marvel of symmetrical geological formation. Overlooking the bay is the steep slope of Paleokastro hill, with its half-ruined walls.

But Voidokilia is more than a stunning beach — it’s a living ecosystem, continuously shaped by wind and sea. Its sandy strip is covered with tall white dunes (Ammophila arenaria). It’s part of the greater Gialova lagoon ecosystem, which also includes the Bay of Navarino and Sphacteria, a vital biotope complex for Greece. The area is part of the European Natura 2000 network and also designated an archaeological site.

Just a breath away, north of Voidokilia, lies the tiny beach of Glossa, perfect for those seeking seclusion. It is surrounded by rocks and vegetation.

Gialova – Golden Beach/Divari

Very close to Gialova, this is a long sandy beach with tamarisks and turquoise-green waters. Its northern side borders a wetland, and on the west it narrows into a strait that almost touches Sphacteria Island. This strait is the second opening from the Bay of Navarino to the Ionian Sea — too shallow for ships. The waters are very shallow, so you must walk quite a bit to swim deep. Still, the sea is crystal-clear and clean. While swimming, you’ll enjoy unique views of the bay and can even cross to Sphacteria, where there’s a small beach.

You can access the beach by parking in various spots, or you can reach it by boat as part of a tour around the Bay of Navarino, which concludes with a refreshing swim here.

Romanos Beach

Very large and sandy, with pristine waters lapping the Ionian Sea. It’s organized in parts and separated into smaller beaches by peninsulas. Loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) come ashore here to lay eggs. Nearby is the famous Costa Navarino resort, and its Dunes Beach has earned a Blue Flag.

Finikounda – Mavrovouni

A vast sandy beach on the western side of Finikounda, considered one of Messinia’s best. Partially organized with beach bars and facilities for water sports. Nearby campsites operate close to the sea.

Koroni – Zaga and Memi

A golden sandy stretch about 4 km long, starting from the southern foothills of Koroni Castle. The eastern side is called Zaga, and the western extension Memi. Some areas are organized.

Kalamata – Eastern Beach

Residents and visitors of Kalamata enjoy year-round access to the city’s beach. It’s long and sandy, lined with a coastal promenade and main road above it. Full amenities: hotels, beach bars, tavernas, ouzeris, water sports, and amusement parks. While swimming, look back to admire the imposing Mount Taygetos overlooking the city.

Messini – Bouka

Awarded a Blue Flag, it’s one of Messinia’s most expansive beaches, close to the town of Messini and Kalamata. Excellent amenities, beach bars, umbrellas, loungers, and unorganized areas as well. Fine sand, lovely waters, water sports, beach volleyball and soccer courts.

Kardamyli – Ritsa

Ritsa is a long pebble beach with deep blue waters and views of Mount Taygetos — a favorite of locals. Partially organized, with tamarisks and olive trees for shade. Canoes and pedal boats for rent, tavernas, easy parking. Bring a mask to explore the seabed. Across from Kardamyli lies the forested island Meropi, uninhabited and…swimmable.

Stoupa (near Kardamyli)

A modern seaside village built for summer vacations, with Taygetos as its backdrop, just 45 km from Kalamata. Known for its lively and cosmopolitan beach, dubbed the “Miami of Mani,” with golden sand and turquoise waters. Full amenities: tavernas, all-day cafés, shops, and hotels.

Kalogria

A famous spot in Messinian Mani, known for its organized beach with white sand. Located next to Stoupa, with lush nature and pool-like waters giving it an exotic feel. Facilities include beach bars, tavernas, beach volleyball courts, a diving center, and more.

Beloved by writer Nikos Kazantzakis, who came in 1917. His novel’s hero Alexis Zorbas was real — George Zorbas — a miner he hired nearby. Kazantzakis even built a platform in the sea by a cave (named after Zorbas) on Kalogria beach.

Laconia

Gytheio Beaches: Mavrovouni

At the base of the Mavrovouni settlement, close to Gytheio, lies one of Laconia’s longest and loveliest beaches. Partially organized, with golden sand and clean waters. Despite its popularity, it rarely feels crowded. Beach bars, restaurants, and water sports facilities available.

Selinitsa

Just 1 km north of Gytheio. Huge, local-favorite, family-friendly.

Valtaki – Glyfada

Famous for the rusted shipwreck of the cargo ship Dimitrios (formerly Klintholm, built 1950), stranded here since 1981 after a storm. It now serves as a landmark.

Limeni

Located in Laconian Mani, Limeni’s crystal-clear turquoise waters and traditional Mani architecture make it a summer magnet. Famous for its seafood tavernas, stone houses, and charm.

Gerolimenas

Fishing boats and yachts, traditional Mani cuisine, fresh fish, gourmet touches, boutique hotels, and stone buildings by the sea. Clear green-blue waters bathed in sunlight. A rare mix of authenticity and modern tourism. From above, it resembles a Sicilian village — fitting, as it shares Sicily’s latitude. The sea and the pink sunrise over Cape Grosso’s cliffs are unforgettable.

Elafonisos – Simos Beach

Famed for its unbelievable green-turquoise waters and vast sandy shores, Simos is one of Greece’s — and the world’s — most stunning beaches. The shore is tinged pink from tiny shells and red coral. Split by a narrow strip into Sarakiniko Bay (the big beach) and Fragos Bay (the small beach). Impressive dunes (up to 10 m high) and a cedar forest lie above. The beach may be named after a sponge diver or a hermit who drowned here.

Argolida

Nafplio – Karathona

A local favorite just 4 km from Nafplio. Beautiful waters, sand and pebbles, tamarisks, palm trees. Blue Flag beach, fully organized, family-friendly. Hikers enjoy the Arvanitia path leading there.

Sambatiki and Fokianos

About 7 km from Leonidio, Sambatiki is a scenic seaside village with a small, calm port. Known for its crystal waters, white pebbles, and seaside tavernas.

Fokianos

After Poulithra, a stunning 26 km mountain drive takes you to this serene and secluded cove. A breathtaking, quiet beach with clear waters and white pebbles, minimal facilities from a few tavernas and lodgings, surrounded by lush greenery.

Porto Heli – Agios Aimilianos

Small coves with emerald waters, accessible by boat, surround this lovely chapel by the sea. Stay until sunset for unforgettable views of Spetses Island.

Ilia

Kourouta

Popular with locals and Greeks, Kourouta offers a vast, sandy, partially organized beach and a promenade with cafés and restaurants. Stay for the sunset with views toward Zakynthos.
