Plans for “Phantom of the Opera” at the new Rex

The management of the National Theater dreams that the refurbished Rex would take Greek theater to new heights

An Athens Court granted the National Theater of Greece the right to use the Rex Theater at Panepistimiou Street in the city center as part of the aim of reconstructing Omonoia Square and the surrounding area. The court ruled that the National Theater can use all three stages hosted at the Rex building that currently include Sineak-Paxinou and the Kotopouli stages.

National Theater Director Sotiris Hatzakis said that the ground floor stages would be used for musicals. He plans to launch the “Phantom of the Opera” at this stage, the largest of the three at the Rex.

The theater will no longer double as a music stage but will be refurbished and used specifically for theater. The reconstruction work is thanks to September’s 260,000-euro surplus and additional funds saved by the National Theater.

About the Rex

The Rex Cinema and Theater in downtown Athens was built in the mid-1930s in Art Deco style by the same architects who created the nearby “Pallas”. It has three halls and had air-conditioning from the start of its operations, even though this was rare at the time.
