Porto Lagos: The village in Xanthi with the flamingos and the impressive, floating monastery

A water-filled land on the borders with Komotini that makes the best of lake Vistonida’s majestic glory

The somewhat “exotic” name, which is reminiscent of a port in Latin America, together with the idyllic water-filled landscape, gives Porto Lagos a truly unique character, that remains ever impressive and generally outside the main attractions for tourists in northern Greece.

The village is located on the borders between Xanthi and Komotini and has a population of only 339 residents – according to the 2011 census. Access to the village is easy, but there are no large hotel units, and you won’t find large tourist crowds here. There are, however, some rooms to let if you want to spend a few days in the area.

Despite its small size and the fact that it does not have direct access to the sea, Porto Lagos is a port of great importance for the surrounding area – after all it is the northernmost port in Greece, and its coast is the northernmost Greek coast. There are all the necessary facilities to assist both fish boats and commercial boats, as well as, in more recent years, yachts.
