Poverty threatens 17.4% of Greeks: ELSTAT

These are findings of the ELSTAT survey on family budgets in 2022

Newsroom September 28 01:43

According to the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT), 17.4% of Greece’s population is at risk of poverty when only the equivalent expenditure with the purchase mode of acquisition is taken into account in the calculation of the indicator (17.1% in 2021), while the indicator decreases to 13.4% of the population (12.2% in 2021) when all consumption expenditure is taken into account, regardless of the mode of acquisition (imputed rent from owner-occupied housing, own-account goods, goods and services provided free of charge by the employer, other households, non-profit organisations, the state, etc.)

While food price increases lead households to spend more and more on these necessities while buying fewer goods.

These are findings of the ELSTAT survey on family budgets in 2022 (conducted on a sample of 6,196 private households across the country), which the report also states:

*The average annual household spending on purchases reached 19,204.08 euros (1,600.34 per month), recording an increase, at current prices, of 12.7% compared to 2021.

*50% of households spend more than 1,289 euros per month.

*Households living in rented accommodation spend on average 17.4% of their budget on rent.

*The share of average expenditure on food and non-alcoholic beverages and housing of households in the poorest 20% of the population is 58.1% of household expenditure, while the share of the richest 20% of the population is 25.6%.

The highest average annual expenditure was recorded in the region of Attica and amounted to 22,305.84 euros, while the lowest was recorded in the region of Central Greece and amounted to 13,828.56 euros. The average annual expenditure of households in 2022 appears to have decreased by 24.5% compared to 2008.
