Report: First 6 isles to lose reduced VAT rate announced

If true, high-end destinations Rhodes, Mykonos, Santorini, Paros, Rhodes and Skiathos affected

Rhodes, Santorini, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros and Skiathos will reportedly be the first six islands where a discounted VAT rate will be axed, bringing the lowest rate to 9 percent (from 6), the medium rate to 13 percent (from 9) and the “uber-high” rate to 23 percent (from the current 16 percent).

According to media reports, islands facing waves of illegal migration, such as Kos, Samos, Lesvos and Hios, will initially be excluded from the memorandum-mandated hikes in islands’ VAT rates.

According to the memorandum, the measure will be implemented in three phases: Oct. 1, June 1, 2016 and Jan. 1, 2017.

The first mention of the measure was given by private Mega channel during its prime-time newscast.
