The ongoing political and economic volatility in Greece, especially after the announcement of the referendum 3 weeks ago by Greek PM Alxis Tsipras, has seen the number of citizens filing requests for new passports and renewing their old ones double, according to Greek police authorities. Under normal circumstances 4 to 7 passport renewals or new issues would be handled each day, according to police statistics. This number has gone up to 14 per day nationwide. “What else can I do” said one man waiting in line to receive a new passport. “Why stay here, I do not want to live in a ‘Latin American Republic”, he added. The rise in passport requests has reached 50 per cent ion some Police precincts where the procedure takes place.
