Sakkari opens Wimbledon campaign with win

She beat Zoe Hives of Australia, 6-1, 6-4

Sakkari pushed past qualifier Zoe Hives of Australia, 6-1, 6-4 in 78 minutes, thanks to six breaks of serve and 19 winners.

Sakkari went 5-3 on the grass in three events heading into Wimbledon and says she feels confident in her game despite not having reached the final at any of them.

She improves to 7-5 lifetime at Wimbledon with her win and will race either Daria Saville or Viktoriya Tomova in the second round.

“I think the more you play, the better you feel – the better prepared you are for this amazing tournament,” Sakkari said. “I think the fact that I started in Nottingham and played a lot of matches really helped my performance today. I feel very good on the grass, I’m very confident, very excited, and looking forward to my match tomorrow.”
