Schäuble: A Greek politician suggested a Grexit!

Germany’s Finance minister’s statement, torpedoes rumours

An almost literal “bombshell” was dropped by German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble, when he was asked to comment on Financial Times reports that the Merkel government and Berlin had prepared a plan for Greece’s exit from the Eurozone.

According to Mega TV channel, Mr. Schäuble revealed that a Greek politician -which he did not name- had proposed a Grexit.

“A Greek politician, for whose democratic feelings of responsibility I am in doubt, told me that it would be much better if Greece left the Euro”, stated Mr. Schäuble according to Mega TV and added: “The same thing happened with Italian politicians”.

The German FinMin argued that “there was a government plan formed, at the time, for Greece to leave the euro”, which according to Mr. Schäuble, had been prepared by Athens.

“There was a plan for Greece to leave the Euro, formed by Greek politicians. Do you think Germany would not have formed a backup plan? We had a plan A, a plan B, a plan C and a plan D”, stated Mr. Schäuble.

The German Finance Minister, during today’s talks with reporters in Berlin attributed the Greek crisis to the Greek elite’s choices. “We have said many times that the Greek people suffer from the decades’ worth of omissions by the Greek elite”, stated Mr. Schäuble.

The German Finance Minister and close associate of Angela Merkel insisted that Greece is heading in the right direction, and heralded a visit of the Greek Finance Minister to Berlin. “On June 11th, I will have the opportunity to meet with Mr. Stournaras again”, noted Mr. Schäuble.
