Olympiakos FC manager Jose Miguel Michel tendered his resignation from the Olympiakos bench on Monday afternoon following the 2-2 home draw with Aris in Karaiskakis and the club’s ownership has accepted it.

As the club’s administration said in a statement: “Mr. Michel informed us of his decision to leave the club immediately. Mr. Michel came in at a difficult time for the club and tried to help. We wish him only success in the future.”

The Spanish manager also released a statement emphasising: “I have informed the club’s management of my decision to resign. I think this is the best moment for the team. I thank the whole team for the cooperation, and all these intense months, I leave as a friend and I wish the team to conquer all its goals.”

The Spanish coach, in his second term at the red and whites, was unable to complete the season, as he only stayed a few months.

Mitchell took charge of the Piraeus club on 20 September 2020, being the third manager since the start of the season that started with Pedro Martins (he left on 1 August after being eliminated by Haifa in the Champions League qualifiers), continued with Carlos Corberan (their partnership ended on September 18 after a 2-1 defeat by Aris in Thessaloniki).

Mitchell had coached Olympiakos for almost two years (4/2/13 – 6/1/15), during which in 91 games he had a record of 65 wins, eleven draws and 15 losses, winning two championships (2012-2013, 2013 -2014) and a cup (2012-2013).

However, yesterday’s match with Aris turned out to be his swan song on the red and white bench. In his second term in 32 matches, he counted 18 wins, 10 draws, 4 losses.

Jose Anigo will be the temporary coach.
