Turkey in a state of alert after twin blasts at the main Turkish station at Ankara

At least 97 people were killed in Ankara, the Turkish capital, during a conflict between the state and Kurdish militants. The attack – believed to have been carried out by two suicide bombers – took place during a peace rally when two explosions outside Ankara’s main train station were noted on Saturday morning.
Reuters reported that at least 20 bodies were covered by flags within minutes after the incident and body parts were scattered across the road. Witnesses at the scene say the blasts were heard seconds apart, shortly after 10 a.m. Nearby skyscrapers were rocked by the powerful explosions.

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu is holding a meeting with government officials and the country’s security chiefs to discuss the attack.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack but it is believed to be related to the long-standing dispute between the Turkish states and Kurdish militants in the south-east of Turkey.

The Greek Foreign Ministry issued the following statement following the attack:

We unequivocally condemn the deadly terrorist attacks carried out this morning in Ankara. We express our deep condolences to the families of the innocent victims.
