Syrian President Assad says Russia is fighting Nazis in Ukraine in meeting with Putin in Moscow

The Syrian president’s previous official visit to Moscow took place in September 2021

Russian President Bashar al-Assad met with President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Wednesday.

According to media reports, Assad said – during the joint statements – that Russia is fighting Nazi forces in Ukraine.

The Syrian president’s previous official visit to Moscow took place in September 2021.

In December 2022, there was a tripartite meeting of the defence ministers of Syria, Turkey, and Russia. It was the first since 2011.

Relations have been severed since the outbreak of war in Syria in 2011, as Turkey sided with Islamist rebel groups fighting against Damascus.

Russia, Syria’s main ally, has for its part since 2015 provided decisive military support to Assad’s armed forces, changing the course of the armed conflict.
