The personal archive of Ali Pasha comes to light

Historian Vasilis Panagiotopoulos focuses on the actions and character of Ali Pasha

Newsroom July 6 01:06

For the first time the truth behind the myth of the longest running Pasha of the Ottoman Empire, Ali Pasha, comes to light thanks to the publishing of his personal archive.

Historian Vasilis Panagiotopoulos focuses on the actions and character of Ali Pasha.

According to the reporter of newspaper “Ta Nea” Michela Chartourari, one thousand four hundred sixty-nine documents written in Greek which were in the drawer of Ali Pasha are published for the first time, highlighting in depth one of the greatest periods of Greek history.

These valuable documents of Ali Pasha illustrate his actions and moves during the most active period of his reign (1788-1822) until his death and belong to the collection of Chotzi archived in the Gennadius Library of the American School in Athens.

These documents published by Institute of Modern Greek Studies of the National Research Foundation have an additional special interest because they represent a significant scientific proposal of Mr. Panagiotopoulos.

Each of the 1,469 documents is accompanied by a mini-study in the form of an introductory note.

Specialized in Ottoman period, Mr. Panagiotopoulos signs the charming (and now documented) portrait of Tepelenli which responds to the ideologically charged and usually negative biographies that have been published about him.
