Tsipras maneuver with simple proportional representation

The possibility to decrease the 3% threshold required for a party to enter the Parliament has not been ruled out

Amid social, political and party tension, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras decided to untie the Gordian knot by himself as far as the disagreements emerged inside SYRIZA on the new election law.

Alexis Tsipras attended the meeting of SYRIZA’s Political Secretariat which stated its support for a change in election law toward a system of simple proportional representation without a seat bonus and the start of a “broad-based” dialogue on revising the Constitution, while it did not rule out the possibility to decrease the 3% threshold required for a party to enter the Parliament.

With this decision, he puts an end to any disagreements inside the ruling party over the new election law.

Given that SYRIZA needs at least three, if not four more parties, in order to get the majority of 200 MPs and the new election law to take effect in the coming elections, Mr. Tsipras realized that the required consensus could be secured only with simple proportional representation. Tsipras supports this for another reason, though: to lead New Democracy to political isolation, since it is the only stable force for enhanced proportional representation.
