Turkey’s non-stop provocations: “If Greece continues the violations, we will discuss the sovereignty of the Greek islands”

Turkish FM: "Greek politicians have an inferiority complex" - Athens responds: Turkey's accusations are not legal & fuel instability

Newsroom June 7 06:20

The Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu made yet again a series of new provocative statements about the Greek islands at noon on Tuesday, during a press conference with his counterpart from Northern Macedonia.

The Turkish Foreign Minister stressed that “the sovereignty of Greek islands with a demilitarized regime will be discussed, if Greece continues the violations”, while adding that Greek politicians have an inferiority complex.

“The attitude of Greece after the meeting of our president with Mr. Mitsotakis is not surprising. For years there are issues on which we can not agree with Greece. Greece commits a violation on the islands given to it on the condition that it does not equip them. This is the equipment of the islands. Greece continues to militarize the islands. We have sent two letters with our positions to the United Nations. In case Greece continues the violations on islands with demilitarized regime, then their sovereignty will be discussed. Because they can not answer legally, they become nervous, give stupid answers, do demagogy. They say that ‘Turkey wants to take our islands’, Greek politicians have an inferiority complex. I do not go out every day to attack Greece. Our people do not have such expectations. If this situation continues, the sovereignty of the islands will be discussed”, he said.

The Greek side has sent two letters to the Secretary-General regarding the linking of the sovereignty of the Greek islands with the -alleged- obligation to demilitarize these islands, in which it rejected the whole of the Turkish arguments.

The two letters of the Permanent Representative of Greece to the UN Secretary General underline a series of legal arguments, especially that the unilateral objections of the Turkish side are not legal, have purely revisionist motives and further fuel the instability caused by Turkey with its actions.

This is emphasized by diplomatic sources in Athens regarding these new provocative statements of Cavusoglu.
