In the latest provocation against Greece by Turkish officials, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu egregiously disputed Greek sovereignty over the Aegean islands where Greek forces were stationed.
Speaking in the Turkish parliament and after the parliamentary representative of the opposition asked him about the demilitarisation status of the Aegean islands, Cavusoglu replied that the islands should be demilitarised, adding that the status was violated from 1960 onwards when the People’s Party was in power.
He noted that Greece does not have any sovereign right over the islands, by stationing troops on them, stressing that Turkey had sent a relevant letter to inform the UN about the matter.
