Ukraine launches “wave after wave” of assaults on key Russian lines

Overnight fighting appeared to be concentrated in the southern Zaporizhzhia region in what one official told US media was likely a “main thrust of a Ukrainian counter offensive”

Ukraine’s counter attack has begun, US officials and Ukrainian military sources have said, following a sweep of attacks along the front line.

Kyiv’s ground forces launched ‘wave after wave’ of assaults on Russian lines in the south of the country, Russian sources claimed on Wednesday night.

The reports were followed by officials briefing US media that the long-awaited counter attack was now underway. The start of the campaign was confirmed by a number of senior Ukrainian officers near the front lines.

Overnight fighting appeared to be concentrated in the southern Zaporizhzhia region, in what one official told US media was likely a “main thrust of a Ukrainian counter offensive”.

Ukraine did not officially comment on fighting in the south but said it had continued to take ground around the eastern side of Bakhmut. Kyiv has so far followed a strict policy of operational silence around the counter offensive.
