Cypriot government has asked the help of the European Support Mechanism

The wildfire that broke out on Saturday in a forest area near villages of Evrychou, Spilia and Sina, in Cyprus, continues to burn, while settlements and military warehouses containing ammunition have been evacuated and important icons have been transferred from the nearby monasteries to a safer location.

The Cypriot government has asked the help of the European Support Mechanism to deal with the wildfire, while other countries have also sent aircrafts to support the Cypriot fire services in their battle with the blaze, including Greece and Israel.

Three French aircrafts and one Italian aircraft are expected to arrive in Cyprus today, while Greece has already sent two Canadair aircrafts and two Super Puma.

A huge force of firefighters are currently battling the blaze, including more than 300 firefighters and 14 aircrafts.

In the meantime, two firemen were killed yesterday in a tragic car accident, when their vehicle fell into a precipice.
