Yannis Kallianos: Holds three responsible for father’s death – Georgiadis Explanation

The healthcare system wasn't the problem, the Minister of Health emphasised that the NHS has good doctors

Newsroom April 26 11:59

New Democracy MP Yannis Kallianos will take legal action following the death of his father at “Attikon” hospital, where he was admitted April 6th. The case has garnered attention due to Kallianos’s direct accusations against the hospital staff. The family’s persistent efforts to secure his father’s admission to the ICU was only after he suffered a cardiac arrest on April 23rd, have led to a series of statements by the family, hospital management, and the Health Minister. The MP’s father who had several health problems passed away April 25th while in the ICU. The hospital management initiated an Administrative Inquiry following allegations from Yannis Kallianos regarding contradictory statements from doctors about his father’s condition.

“In continuation of yesterday’s press release from the “Attikon” General Hospital, we announce today, April 25, 2024, the passing of Dimitris Kallianos, and we express our heartfelt condolences to his family. To investigate all the circumstances of his hospitalisation from the day of admission until today, the Administration of the “Attikon” General Hospital has ordered an Administrative Inquiry,” the hospital’s statement said.

The well-known meteorologist, after bidding farewell to his father yesterday with a touching post on social media, gave an interview on Mega channel stating that he would seek legal action. “It wasn’t the issue of the healthcare system. The problem was that three individuals claimed that my father was fine and didn’t need to be admitted to either the ICU. If they had listened to my brother my father would be here,” he noted. Yannis Kallianos added that he has all messages and recordings, which he’ll hand over to Mr. Kouyas for legal action to ensure accountability for his father’s death. He vows to pursue legal action aggressively, questioning why they were initially told the tests were perfect.

Christos Kallianos, Yannis Kallianos’ brother, added to the tension with statements criticising the state of the public healthcare system, alleging its collapse. He challenged the minister and the prime minister to confront him directly. He contended that his father’s intubation was merely superficial and clarified that he never sought admission to the ICU but rather to a High Dependency Unit. He expressed his frustration with the decision for dialysis treatment which appeared to dehydrate his father. Christos Kallianos accuses the healthcare facility of misinformation, particularly regarding the mention of his father having prostate cancer in “Attikon’s” initial statement. He alleges malfeasance and asserts that his father did not have prostate cancer, suggesting that the statement was drafted by someone who was not a doctor.

Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis provided an explanation stating that to the best of his knowledge due to medical confidentiality, all protocols were followed. Speaking earlier on SKAI he clarified that the process for a patient to get a bed in the ICU does not involve the minister but requires the attending physician to register the patient on the platform and designate them to the nearest ICU. Mr. Georgiadis clarified that ICU admission followed transparent, scientifically-based criteria, and was determined by medical professionals. According to Dimitris Kallianos, he was transferred to “Attikon” hospital on April 6th from Voula General Hospital due to severe diabetes complications. Initially deemed in need of vascular surgery, he was diagnosed with foot gangrene at “Attikon” and underwent surgical operation. Throughout his hospitalisation, various specialists managed his complex conditions. On April 23rd, he suffered a cardiac arrest, leading to intubation and was transfer to the ICU.
