4,000 refugees/illegal immigrants cramming in Piraeus port (exclusive photos)

Situation becoming unmanageable with warehouses turned into housing

Newsroom March 15 09:44

The situation at the port of Piraeus is becoming increasingly unbearable, as large numbers of refugees and illegal immigrants are constantly arriving. Nearly 4,000 refugees and illegal immigrants are hosted at old warehouses turned into ad hoc living areas and open air camps with hundreds of tents. In addition to the 3,680 refugees and illegal immigrants counted by the Greek port authorities on Sunday, another 312 arrived at the port from the islands of Mitylene, Chios and Leros. Meanwhile, the Greek Deputy Minister of Immigration John Mouzalas dodged the question of whether the government had been caught off guard by the refugee crisis, opting to sing the praises of MGOs and volunteers. ‘We are trying’, he said referring to the living conditions at the port of Piraeus, adding that conditions would improve.
