Blue-eyed people prone to alcoholism

Studies could help in more psychiatric conditions

If you have blue eyes you better stay away from the of booze! A new study published in the American Journal of Medical Genetics: Neuropsychiatric Genetics, suggests people who have lighter coloured eyes are more susceptible to alcoholism.

As the research showed people who had blue, green, hazel or light brown colour in the iris centre were more prone to alcohol addiction than people with darker eye colours. According to the study, the explanation is that parts of genes determining eye colour are close to the chromosome with genes related to overconsumption of alcohol.

The researchers are unable at this point to determine the interactive mechanism between the two genes. “This suggests a very interesting possibility-that eye colour could become a useful tool for diagnosing alcohol dependency”, said Dr. Arvis Sulovari, from the University of Vermont and the of the study. He hopes that this research will help unlock the prime causes of not only alcoholism, but other psychiatric conditions too.
