Breakaway leftist leader: SYRIZA broke promises to Greek people

Panagiotis Lafazanis uses dreaded ‘kolotoumba’ word to ridicule former comrades in left party

The latest act in Greek political drama being played out over the split between SYRIZA into the “pro-memorandum” camp and the newly formed “anti-bailout” and far-leftist Popular Unity party included the word … “kolotoumba” on Sunday.

The dreaded and politically charged word means, when taken literally, “somersault” or “backflip”. Taken metaphorically and in a political sense it means promising one thing and then doing another, or, finally caving in to what you promised not do (i.e. sign, implement bailout terms). Political Unity leader and one-time SYRIZA firebrand Panagiotis Lafazanis launched an all-out attack on former PM Alexis Tsipras on Sunday by using the exact phrase, charging that the latter implemented a plan to deliver a third memorandum bailout that “exterminates the Greek people”.

Speaking to the Skai TV station, Lafazanis said SYRIZA broke its pre-election promises and choose a pro-memorandum course. “The (initial) program was not implemented; an incredible about-face occurred, and suddenly, from anti-memorandum (advocates) we turned into pro-memorandum.”

Asked to name the “culprit” of this political about-face, he responded: “SYRIZA’s leadership”, before asking, rhetorically, himself:

“Will responsibility and stability (in one’s political stance) come under fire or will the ‘kolotoumba’ be applauded?”
