One obscure fact out of the devastating quake that struck Nepal over the weekend is the fact that the Himalayan country is used by many same-sex couples in Israel for surrogate pregnancies.

According to the Jerusalem Post this week, two planes arrived in Tel Aviv from Katmandu this week carrying dozens of babies, pregnant surrogate mothers and many of the gay couples that will then adopt the infants.

Apparently, one of the two gay men in the relationship donates the sperm for the pregnancy. What wasn’t clarified in the media reports is whether the expectant mother is also the biological mother or serves as a “surrogate womb”.

Surrogacy is prohibited in Israel for gay or unmarried couples due to religiously influenced law.
