Government plans to extend the use of credit/debit cards

The use of credit/debit cards will be mandatory for certain age ranges

Speaking at a Hellenic Federation of Enterprises (SEV) event on tax evasion and, Alternate Finance Minister Tryfon Alexiadis revealed plans to encourage electronic transactions and make electronic transactions mandatory for certain classes of businesses, based on criteria such as location and size.

The minister announced that the installation of POS machines will become mandatory for new businesses and the measure will gradually be extended to already existing businesses based on their sector and region, while business using POS will be awarded with a reduction in VAT rate.

Also the use of credit/debit cards will be mandatory for certain age ranges and lotteries offering gifts for every 1,000 and 2,000 euros spent using electronic transactions. He also noted the need to change attitudes in the public sector and encourage use of electronic payments.
