Talks to sell F16 fighter planes to Bulgaria

Bulgaria wants to beef up its air fleet following a recommendation from NATO

Greece is negotiating the sale of some of its old F16 jets to Sofia and leasing new ones from Washington. The talks with both the United States and Bulgaria come fter NATO asked Bulgaria to rejuvenate its air fleet last February. Bulgarian officials had approached Athens about the possibility of purchasing between six and eight fighter planes. The two countries’ defence ministers had met in March. On its part, Greece is interested in replacing the jets sold with Block 52s but Washington is not interested in leasing these.
