Moscovici: EC to campaign for Greek ‘yes’ vote

EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner P. Moscovici says 1. Greece should stay in euro; 2.The door is still open for negotiations

Newsroom June 29 10:20

EU Economics and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Pierre Moscovici Tweeted on Sunday that Greece can still restart negotiations with its creditors. Furthermore, he told French RTL radio on Monday that a deal between Greece and its creditors is “only a few centimeters away”, while insisting that the country should stay in the Eurozone.

Speaking after bailout talks between Athens and institutional lenders broke down at the Eurogroup, Moscovici said that all must be done to keep Greece in the eurozone. He made this statement just a day before the June 30 deadline for Greece’s repayment to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

“We must find a compromise,” he told RTL when asked if other EU countries could make concessions. Finding common ground seems optimistic right now as it would require nations giving up their tough posturing. On his part, Tsipras seems unlikely to back down in his belief that the creditors proposals would merely lead Greece on a vicious debt spiral without end.

Despite this, Moscovici urged Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras to consider a “yes” vote in the upcoming referendum. Furthermore, he said that the European Commission would begin a campaign in favor of “yes” in the Greek referendum championed by European Commissioner Jean-Claude Juncker and Moscovici.
