Mountainous Arcadia: The home of heroes

This home of heroes is full of monuments that mark glorious achievements.

Mountainous Arcadia is considered one of the most popular winter destinations in Greece thanks to its proximity to Athens and the striking beauty of the area under a thick veil of snow.

The picturesque villages of Dimitsana, Stemnitsa and Vytina are nestled among the steep slopes of Mt. Mainalo in the Peloponnese and offer a rare view into Greek history, since these places are where the Greek Revolution of 1821 against the Turks actually began.

The village of Dimitsana offers an amazing view of the Lousios River and its valley and is surrounded by snow capped mountain tops and lush forests. Some of its most famous sights are the six remaining Gunpowder Mills that were built under the guise of home industry in the middle of the 18th century and used to produce gunpowder for the Revolutionary War.

The Philosophou and Timiou Prodromou Monasteries are also worth visiting, along with the houses of heroes of the Revolution.

Stemnitsa is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Arcadia, due to its picturesque location and its historical churches and mansions. Take a stroll around the village to admire its Byzantine churches, cobblestone paths, the beautiful square and an interesting Folklore Museum.

The most popular villahe of Mountainous Arcadia, Vytina, is located at the heart of the region and is blessed with a unique landscape. Although the village was burned down on 7 occasions, as it was the home of a number of legendary heroes of the Revolutionary War, the area remains beautiful and even offers an ultra modern ski centre with first-class facilities.
