Navarino Challenge marathon showcases Messinia’s bountiful countryside

The marathon takes place at Messinia from September 19-21 with many other events focused on healthy living

Newsroom September 15 12:47

Greek-American ultra-marathon Olympic runner Dean Karnazes is joining a number of other great sports personalities for the “Navarino Challenge” marathon to take place from September 19-21. Specifically, participants will run a 15km route starting from Kalamata and running through some of the most beautiful Messinian landscape dotted with olive groves and fig trees.

The challenge isn’t just beautiful but also for a good cause – to raise awareness on the issue of childhood obesity and the benefits of a Mediterranean diet. Childhood obesity is a problem that knows no borders, and the event has drawn global attention.

Karnazes – the man who ran 50 marathons in all 50 US states in 50 consecutive days – has become something of a spokesperson for the event. “Of hundreds of running events across the planet, the Navarino Challenge has quickly become my favorite,” he told the New York Times. “My fondest memory is when Greek dancing spontaneously broke out at the conclusion of the final day of running.”
