New Google Doodle honors Melina Merkouri

She was an actress, a singer and a politician

Google celebrates the 95th birthday of Melina Mercouri dedicating a doodle which depicts her face and the Acropolis in the background.

Melina Merkouri was born in 1920 and she was an actress, a singer and a politician.

She met international success with her performances in Never on Sunday, Phaedra,Topkapi, and Promise at Dawn and she won the award for Best Actress at the 1960 Cannes Film Festival. She was also nominated for an Academy Award, a Tony Award, three Golden Globe Awards, and two BAFTA Awards.

Melina Merkouri was also a strong advocate for the return of the Parthenon Marbles to Greece launching the campaign for the return of the Parthenon sculptures which are now displayed in British Museum.
