Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) MP Nikos Voutsis was elected new Parliamentary president on Sunday by 181 MPs. 113 deputies cast a blank vote and 3 ballots were rendered invaled. There were three abstentions.
He was voted in by the 153 deputies of SYRIZA-ANEL (Independent ANEL Greeks leader Panos Kammenos and Nikos Nikolopoulos were missing) as well as 9 deputies from the Union of Centrists and 28 from other parties.
Voutsis takes over from controversial Greek president Zoe Konstantopoulou. He was born in 1951 in Athens and is a civil engineer. He served as interior minister following SYRIZA’s election win on January 25.
