Pirate broadcaster shut down, two unionists arrested

ERT Open commenced with closure of state broadcaster ERT in June 2011

The head of the public broadcaster’s employees’ union and the same group’s treasurer were arrested atop an Athens hill on Wednesday by police for the illegal transmission of a radio signal.

The two men, long-time unionists Panagiotis Kalfagiannis and Dimitris Kounis,  has arrived at the Attikon Alsos hilltop to check on the transmitters broadcasting the ERT Open signal.

“ERT Open” was the broadcast arm of fired employees from the closed state broadcaster in June 2011, when ERT was ordered shut by the then Samaras government. A much slimmer broadcaster, NERIT, succeeded ERT before the name and several hundred fired staff were restored by the current SYRIZA government.

Police arrested the two and shut down the transmitters after a request by the state-run national telecommunications committee.  ERTopen had been illegally broadcasting on 106.7 FM.
