President Rivlin to Tsipras: You are doing what your people need you to do and not what they would like you to do

Mr. Tsipras reiterated the need to address religious hatred

Newsroom November 26 02:23

The further development of the strategic relations between Greece and Israel, the need to address the problem of religious fundamentalism aiming to achieve the peaceful coexistence and the protection of Democracy, that nowadays is being tested, and despite its weaknesses remains the best form of government,  – dominated the talks between Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and Israeli President Reuven Rivlin on Thursday.

Mr. Tsipras and Mr. Rivlin had a political and philosophical discussion on the pros and cons of Democracy and its relation with contemporary political systems.

Mr. Rivlin told that Greek Prime Minister is the classic example of a leader leader who “bridges the contradictions between want and need”.

“You are doing what your people needs you to do and not what it would like you to do; you are the classic example of a leader who bridges the contradictions between want and need,” the Israeli President said.

On his part, the Greek prime minister underlined that Democracy is a regime that takes into account the people’s will. “If we want to take Democracy a step forward, we must show more confidence to the people,” he noted adding that he strongly believes in collective conscience and the people’s instinct.

Moreover, Mr. Tsipras referred to the historic relations between Greeks and Jews, expressed his satisfaction with the development of bilateral relations and reiterated the need to address religious hatred, stressing the need for religions to promote the value of love and respect and not hate.

Rivlin responded expressing his concern over the situation in the region, adding that ISIS is not a local problem, but an international one, and referred to the attacks of jihadists in Egypt, and terrorism in various parts of the world, including Europe.

He also stressed the need for Greece and Israel -as members of the free world and as neighbors who have historical relations based on principles – to continue their cooperation.
