Russia continues carrying out heavy airstrikes in Syria escalating its military engagement in Syria. Some activists, though, claimed that the targets did not include only IS militants but other groups and opponents of the Syrian government.
Moscow had insisted that the airstrikes targeted IS militants while U.S. officials and others said that the Russians appeared to be attacking opposition groups which fought Syrian government forces.
A spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin admitted on Thursday that Russia’s airstrikes in Syria are targeting not only Islamic State militants but also other groups.
Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Thursday that Russia was fighting IS militants as well as a “list” of other groups.
“These organizations are well known and the targets are chosen in coordination with the armed forces of Syria,” he said, without giving specific names.
