The coalition government’s candidate Stavros Dimas responded to speculation that says that ultranationalist Golden Dawn (GD) deputies could vote for him. “As I respect the democratic institutions, I will not accept being elected President of the Republic with GD votes,” he said.
Mr. Dimas’ statements come following similar statements made by other conservative New Democracy deputies, including Christos Markogiannakis, Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Dora Bakoyannis.
Mr. Markogiannakis told Mega TV channel that his party is unwilling to accept support from a criminal organization, whereas Mr. Mitsotakis said he would vote against Mr. Dimas if the GD party vote in support of the candidate.
Refering to speculation on GD support, Ms. Bakoyannis said: “If New Democracy deputies find out that GD MPs are going to vote for Stavros Dimas for President of the Republic, then a large number of ND MPs will vote ‘present’ in the third round of voting.” Her statements were published on the skai.gr web site.
