SYRIZA calls on Greens and leftist factions to collaborate

The main opposition SYRIZA part urges those who are opposed to the Memorandum to set aside differences and work together

Main Opposition Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) President Alexis Tsipras spoke at the meeting of SYRIZA’s central committee on Saturday and invited all social forces that have “suffered from the memorandum disaster, struggled and are fighting for political change in the country and for the victory of our people” to join together in the upcoming elections. He stretched out a hand of friendship to leftist groups and called on leftist socialists, extra-parliamentary leftist groups, the Greek Communist Party (KKE) and ANDARSYA to realize that the battle that the left is called to fight should be above existing differences between left factions. He said that it’s a battle that concerns the present and future of labor forces and the popular movement.

Mr. Tsipras also urged Green and anti-memorandum parties that agree on the program presented by Mr. Tsipras in Thessaloniki in principle to cooperate with his party and work together.

“We are urging them to set aside everything that divides us and work, each from his own post, to end this social disaster, to overthrow the government of the memorandum and to replace it with a government that places the interests of the majority in the center,” said Mr. Tsipras.

Responding to questions about the collaboration with the Democratic Left (DIMAR) that fell through, Mr. Tsipras said that despite recent disagreements, SYRIZA is monitoring the political processes that have followed since DIMAR’s departure from the coalition government. He said that both SYRIZA and DIMAR agree that a change of government would be beneficial for Greece.

Mr. Tsipras expressed his party’s sincerity and respect concerning DIMAR. He said that the need for a broader coalition will remain after the elections even if there is no agreement forged beforehand.
