Tensions rise at Idomeni camp between Greek police and refugees

UNHCR members evacuated due to scuffles in the morning

Tensions at the Idomeni refugee camp were high, Thursday, when nearly 100 refugees and migrants attempted to set up tents on the Greek-FYROM border fence near the railway tracks. The refugees and migrants, who official Greek estimates bring to around 10,000, have refused to relocate to organised hotspots across Greece demanding the opening of the borders to continue their journey to northern Europe. Greek police tried to prevent the refugees who responded by hurling rocks against them. After failing to set up their tents, the refugees staged a sit in protest. UNHCR members were forced to leave their offices set up near the Idomeni refugee camp in the morning, after refugees started gathering around the UN offices and the situation looked ominous.
