Four killed in torrential rains in Greece (photos+videos)

Four people lost their lives in heavy rainfall, Tuesday. A 63-year-old woman, near the city of Kalamata in the Peloponnese, who was confined to a wheel-chair, was trapped in her basement level apartment when waters flooded her house before help could arrive. An 92-year-old man in Thourio, a 90-year-old woman and a 77-year- old man from the region of Lakonia also lost their lives in the weather storm. Meanwhile, the extreme rainfalls across the country caused havoc with hundreds of citizens calling police for help from the southern parts of the country to the north in Thessaloniki.  In the city of Igoumenitsa, in the northwest of Greece, a Romanian family in car was nearly swept away by waters, when the Karavatsi stream overflowed. The 36-year-old woman and her two underaged children were rescued by the fire department. Coastal roads in the Epirus region in western Greece were covered with water, with the heavy rain causing problems to drivers on the roads network of Sivota, Perdika and Parga in the area. The sudden deluge caused huge problems to the city of Pyrgos in the Peloponnese as houses and stores were flooded and streams overflowed. The Fire department received 350 emergency calls for aid in Kalamata and 30 calls for flooding in the city of Sparta. The city of Thessaloniki also felt the effects of the torrential rains as the highway in the eastern part of the city was blocked off due to a truck losing control because of the slippery road. The city of Volos in central Greece and surrounding villages and twins experienced power failures for nearly an hour due to the heavy rains. Tourists and locals on the island go Zakynthos became witnesses to a rare natural phenomenon doe to the extreme weather change, with a water tornado forming on the sea in the area of Lagana. The Civil Protection Services are on high alert to sea with any problems that could arise as a result of the extreme weather conditions. According to the forecast of National Meteorological Services, strong rains are expected fin the next days in the areas of the Ionian, central Greece, eastern Macedonia and Thrace.
