Tragedy in Moria hotpot as grandmother and grandchild die in explosion (photos-video)

Police evacuate camp

Newsroom November 25 08:31

A 66-year-old woman and her 6 grandchild died at the Moria refugee hotspot, after an explosion and the ensuing fire engulfed the plastic tent their were living in, at Mytilene before midnight on Thursday. The 25-year-old mother of the child and her other 4-year-old child were seriously injured by the explosion and were transferred via a C-130 military helicopter to an Athens Hospital. Authorities believe the explosion might have been caused when the grandmother attempted to light a small gas cooker. The fire quickly spread to other refugee tents with people running in panic to save their lives, while some started rioting and threw rocks against police, after rumours spread that a bomb had gone off. Firefighters arrived on the scene and managed to put out the fire at 3 am in the morning, after a riot police unit had contained the rioters, mainly of African decent. The hotspot was evacuated, with police moving children and women to the surrounding fields.
