UN documents prove Turkey’s role during the Geneva negotiations

The unconstructive role of UN special advisor Espen Eide

According to documents leaked from the UN and they are in the hands of the known journalist Mr. Ignatiou, it seems that Melvut Cavusoglu knew that the negotiations in Geneva on the Cyprus dispute would last two days and not just one as he argues now. It is important to clarify this because the Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs is accusing the Greek side of “leaving” the negotiating table, while in reality it was him personally the one who left by saying that he did not have time for a second day of negotiations as he had to return to Ankara “because he had better things to do”.

 

The UN had informed on the 11th of January all sides (Greece, Turkey, UK, Cyprus and the Turkish-Cypriot Community leaders) that the Geneva Convention would be a two day event and it would be completed on Friday the 13th January.

 

Hence, Mr. Cavusoglu went in Geneva with the objective of not moving from their positions and avoiding any serious conversation on security issues on a political level, which is exactly what they did.

 

The Greek side on the other hand was the last that departed from Geneva, ready to be present on all levels of the negotiations including of course the political too.

The role of Espen Eide, UN special adviser to the Secretary General was once again proven to be at least unproductive if not undermining of the Greek side as he did not clarify that it was him and not the Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Kotzias the one who called for the tripartite meeting, which was denied by Turkey. The article in ‘Politico’ that followed accusing Minister Kotzias was orchestrated by both Turkey in the knowledge of Mr. Eide.
