UNCHR: More than 800,000 migrants passed through Greece in 2015

Greece is a pivotal area in the movement of refugees through Europe

Increasing numbers of refugees and migrants are taking their chances aboard unseaworthy boats in a desperate bid to reach Europe. From the 972,551 arrivals by sea in 2015, more than 800,000 passed through Greece according to data of the UNCHR’s International Migration Organization.

According to the demographics, 25% of arrivals are children, 17% women and 58% men.

Countries of origin: Syria (49%), Afghanistan (21%), Iraq (8%), Eritrea (4%), Pakistan (2%), Nigeria (2%), Somalia (2%), Sudan (1%), Gambia (1%) and Mali (1%).

Of particular interest is the fact that the number shot up significantly in 2015.
