Demonstrations in Donetsk in eastern Ukraine for May Day turned into violent clashes, when about 300 pro-Russian protesters tried to surround the town hall.

Protesters attacked policemen guarding the spot with stones, and in turn -as broadcast by foreign journalists on the spot- police replied with tear gas and stun grenades.

The situation is particularly tense at this time, while there has been no information about any shots being fired.
