Silence, the only sound heard is the diver breathing while he is swimming slowly and steadily over the wreck and recording with his camera the bodies of people who dreamt of a better life.
The video released by the Italian newspaper La Repubblica reveals the watery grave of dozens of migrants who lost their lives in the waters of Lampedusa in an attempt to reach Europe.
“Watch and think the words: Wreck, immigrants, Mediterranean. The words slip so fast that we cannot even realize them, we write them and repeat them. A story, a title, a number, 120, 285, 366. Another word: tragedy,” the Italian journalist, Attilio Boltzoni, writes signing the text accompanying the video.
“We are used to, we have been trained to convey in detail the dynamics of the shipwreck, we are specialized in rebuilding the lives of people who are not here anymore” Boltzoni continues.
As the journalist says, the death of immigrants has become a part of our daily life and some are deeply sad, but many feel quite annoyed.
“Many suffer, but others are angry because they died here, here in Italy where they wouldn’t have wanted them neither alive nor dead. Ideology, prejudice, racism, stupidity that turns into meanness. There is the person who prays, the person who promises and the person who threatens,” Boltzoni said.
